Tenth Rehearsal Preview

Tuesday, March 31st, 2015

From Dr. Whitmire:
Welcome to our 10th rehearsal of Spring 2015! Please sign in.

Thanks for a great Concert on Sunday. The most obvious thing was the sheer beauty of thesound. Many people remarked about that. Yes, there was a big missed entrance and a few spots that we weren’t together, but the overall effect was very good and many passages were absolutely transcendent. On April 12 we will really nail it. Paul will be there.

Absent? If you missed Sunday’s Concert for any reason, please see me. It you had previously spoken to me of an unavoidable conflict, please remind me.

Tonight 3/31 we will begin rehearsing in earnest for our May concert (The Settling Years, I will be earth, Still I rise [women]). I will still leave time for at the second half of the Requiem.

Please sell tickets. Our share of the expenses for this concert are almost $5000. The orchestra has expenses too. Sell your five or buy them and give them as gifts to your friends and family (Our tickets are $10; they are $20 at the door). Cash orchecks made to WMPO.

No Rehearsal this Saturday. Enjoy the holiday weekend.
April 11 will be a full rehearsal. We have to get ready for the concert.

You audacious person, leave this place!
You cannot profane, with these infamous words,
our hearts, our ears and our affections.
It is useless for you to seek to seduce our souls;
our faithfulness is intact and is pledged to our lovers
until death, in the face of misfortune, everlasting.

Like a rock, we stand immobile against the wind and storm,
and are always strong in trust and love.
From us is born the light that gives us pleasure and comfort,
and the power of death alone can change the affections of our hearts.
Respect, ungrateful spirit.
We are examples of loyalty against your primitive hopes,
so do not make yourself bold.

Lyric Diction for Singers

Monday, August 12th, 2013

From: Cara Cammaroto, Voice Faculty
Subject: Lyric Diction for Singers this Fall!

This Fall we are very happy to be offering Lyric Diction for Singers!

The desire to have a diction overview course has been expressed by many voice majors past and present as well as the voice faculty.

Currently, NVCC voice students “parrot” the pronunciation given to them by their private teachers.

Voice departments teach lyric diction in order to train singers on just how to handle the major languages for the art song, opera & oratorio repertoire.

But….we need your help for this to become a reality. We need to get 8-10 students enrolled prior to the start of the fall semester, or the class will be dropped.

I know many of you wait to register or register late for a variety of reasons, but please register early for this course, so we can keep it as an offering that you all need and want whether you are working towards a  AA, AAA or both.

Please see the overview below for a course description. In addition to learning the IPA and pronunciation rules,  will have several performance days with an accompanist for each of the languages.

Lyric Diction for Singers MUS 195 Section 002A    Mondays 5:15-7:05 PM Tyler Building 131

Lyric Diction for Singers

This is an overview course designed to teach voice students the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols and rules of pronunciation.

IPA is a phonetic alphabet used for all languages by singers. Emphasis will be placed on Italian, German & French lyric diction.

The course will focus on the specific rules for singing, which can differ from that of spoken dialogue.

Students will learn how to use this crucial skill in preparing and performing pieces in the above mentioned languages.

Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or concerns.

Looking forward to working with you !

Spring Music

Monday, December 17th, 2012

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers- I hope this message finds you enjoying a wonderful holiday. Let’s all try to sustain the wonderful, transcendent sense of peace and joy that you created when we sang Sicut cervus on November 6.

Music for Spring Semester
-music for our 2/27 concert is in the campus bookstore.

-music for our 3/17-3/24 concert, Cantata Academica (B. Britten), is available at sheetmusicplus.com
I recommend this complete score, but since it is expensive ($44.00), I will make a choral part for those who cannot afford it.

-music for our 5/2-5/3 concerts will be selected from Opera Choruses, edited by John Rutter. It is available at sheetmusicplus.com. (Many of you already own this collection).

We will work on all this music for the beginning of the semester on January 15,  so be sure to have all your music by the first rehearsal on January 15.
Until then, I wish you
Peace-DrW

This semester I would like you to complete online evaluations in addition to written course evaluations that you will do tonight. Please participate. Send me a message when you have completed the online evaluation—put “evaluation competed ” in the subject line.

Go to  http://nveval.com

This verification is to ensure the integrity of the evaluation system, while assuring students that their name and ID number are not saved and their responses are anonymous.

If you have any trouble, contact Patti Thompson at pthompson@iotasolutions.com

Fabrics: Velvet, satin/shiny fabrics, sheer/see-through fabrics like chiffon or lace, sequined fabrics, heavily patterned fabrics

Chorus members are encouraged to look at websites of vendors specializing in outfitting ensembles to get an idea of the overall look of formality we are trying to achieve. If you need to purchase garments to fit the profile, the following websites are just a few we looked at that have appropriate clothing choices. The profile is basic enough that you may be able to find “the right stuff” at a local department store. You may already own an outfit that fits the profile, or you may be able to borrow one from a friend or family member.
