Spread the Word

September 17th, 2012

From Dr. Whitmire: Spread the word!

NOVA Community Chorus (Dr. Mark Whitmire, Director) will present its annual Chorus Benefit Concert on Tuesday, October 2, at 7:30 p.m. Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall on the Alexandria Campus of NOVA. This year’s concert, “Bravo Beethoven!” will feature pianists Christine and David Hagan playing music arranged for piano-four hands. They will be joined by the NOVA Community Chorus in a performance of Beethoven’s Four Scottish Folk Songs and The Choral Fantasy. No tickets are required. A donation is requested. For more information, email mwhitmire  [at] nvcc [dot] edu or call 703-845-6097.

Alto Sectional Rehearsal

September 17th, 2012

From Section Leader Debbie: FYI….   These are low-key — no, I don’t mean we sing everything just a little bit flat– and always helpful.

From Ellie: I invite altos from both choruses to an optional alto sectional rehearsal at my home next Monday, September 24, 7:30 to 9:00 pm.  It would be wonderful if someone who can actually play the piano can come and help with notes; I have a keyboard but very little skill.  We can work on whichever pieces you most feel need the focus.
If there is a desire for it, I can host another sectional on October 29.
Allergy warning: I have two cats. Let me know if you prefer that I  sequester them. One of them is excessively friendly.
Time:  7:30 to 9 p.m.
Contact Ellie for directions.

Antiphonal Choruses

September 15th, 2012

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers-
-Thanks to the great group of women who came to rehearsal today. It helped to assuage the pain of losing so much of Tuesday’s rehearsal. We had the added treat of working with Chris and David , and feeling the excitement of two pianos. Wow!
Below is a chart (.pdf) that shows how I have divided you for Concert III. I have simply formed two equal groups. If, per chance, you have already invested time learning the other part, let me know and I am happy to move you. This is extremely challenging music. Please learn you part outside Tuesday rehearsals.

Sicut Cervus

September 13th, 2012

From Chorister John: Rehearsal tracks for Palestrina’s Sicut Cervus are on cyberbass under “Miscellaneous Works” http://www.cyberbass.com/Miscellaneous%20Midi%20Files.htm

Scottish Folk Songs

September 13th, 2012

From Fred: Singers, Go to YouTube.com to hear 5 part renditions of the Scottish Folk Songs we are singing and download mp3 versions via “listentoYouTube.com” Search on Beethoven 12 Scottish Songs and they’ll pop up.  The “12” is important, otherwise you’ll get about 20 other songs he arranged.
Another way is to use the following links:
Banner of Buccleuch: www.youtube.com/watch?v=98LbxCik9S0
Duncan Cray: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnajRtcWtUQ
Ye shepherds: www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0CdtYwRxCU
Auld Lang Syne: www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhfCtq3Vzi8
I found it helpful and enjoyable, even though their notes were not always what I would be singing.

Updated Sheet Music

August 12th, 2012

From Chorister Ellie: Could you please look at the words for the altos in Chorus I of Lauda Jerusalem?
At about measure 8, it starts not to make sense, as if a syllable got dropped, and then all the way through it’s off. By the end, we’re missing a whole word (eis.)

From Dr. Whitmire: You are right. Here is a corrected version.
From Admin: As rehearsal tracks, recordings and sheet music files become available, they are posted to the music files page, listed on the tab above.

Revised Files

Duncay Gray Translation

August 5th, 2012
