From Christine Hagan: Matt’s recital is going to happen on Thursday at 6:30 in Room 130 (the chorus room). If you have time, would you send a notice to the chorus to see if a few folks might come and support him. He just wants to get it over with; can’t say as I blame him. Thanks!

Recital
June 5th, 2013
From Chorister Cindy: My recital date is set for June 21st, 8pm at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church,1417 West Braddock Road, Alexandria. I am very excited to have the opportunity to do this before I have the baby. Please let the folks from NOVACHORUS know and pass the invitation along to anyone else you know who might be interested. Thanks!
Italy
May 28th, 2013
From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Dr. Templin,
I thought you would want to know that eighteen members of the NOVA Community Chorus are going with me to sing in Italy next month. They will be joining a semi-professional choir that I direct in Richmond. They are all seniors- mostly retired. They come from all walks of life— foreign service officers, federal government employees, lobbyists, journalists, etc. Where are they singing in Italy? Il Duomo in Florence, St. Mark’s in Venice, and St. Peter’s in Rome. The same group has previously sung with me in France (Notre Dame), England (Westminster Abbey), Germany (Leipzig Gewandhaus) and Spain (1992 World’s Fair.) There are few choirs, if any, that have sung in all of these prestigious venues. The fact that they are all seniors makes sit all the more interesting, I think. As you know, the Alexandria Campus serves a large population of seniors who do much to enrich the campus community and the college.
Yours,
Mark
Mozart Requiem in the National Cathedral
May 27th, 2013
From Fred: I highly recommend taking this opportunity to sing the Mozart Requiem in the National Cathedral. Just going to The Cathedral is an event in itself. Going to The Cathedral to hear someone else sing the Mozart Requiem is a bigger event. Going to The Cathedral to sing the Mozart Requiem yourself (or pretend to sing it) is really big. Add to all of that: Reilly Lewis, their organ, that 6 second echo, looking up at that structure when you are not singing. I’ve done it and I hope you will, too.
Summer Brahms
May 22nd, 2013
From Fred: We should expect the Brahms German Requiem to be in German, as I expected. Here is the response to my sales pitch for using English by the President of the host group, New Dominion Chorale. Think of it as an enjoyable learning experience.
—–
From Ed McMahon: Hi –
I believe Mr. Tucker will be doing the Brahms in German as he listed it with its German title. Please do come. We rent scores with the correct words for $2 and we all enjoy the Sing even if we’re not expert in the pronunciation. It’s an easy way to become familiar with the German version since you all know the music.
Hope to see many of you there.
Summer Sings
May 21st, 2013
From Fred: It’s time for the wonderful Summer Sings again. Every Tuesday night in June (see below).
You can participate in these performances with 200 – 300 other singers from the Washington, DC area’s big choruses without rehearsals. If you have not sung a particular work, just come, sight-read the music and enjoy being immersed with other singers who have. It only costs $10. You can park for free under the church if you arrive early enough (before 7:00 will probably do) or park on the street or in a paid parking garage not far away.
I sent a note to New Dominon Chorale asking them to use the English language version of the Brahms Req.
I’ve attached a copy of their flyer (links) so you can send it to friends of yours who sing too.
Here is a link to youtube with NovaChorus singing the Mozart Requiem:
youtube.com/watch?v=Am2vMf4RqUM&list=PLB70DECB333F975B4
I hope to make most of these and will carpool with other singers.
Summer Class
May 14th, 2013
From Dr. Whitmire: Message to singers who are taking my summer class starting tonight
Tonight’s rehearsal will be at 7:00 pm in Bisdorf Rm 427. Please bring a boombox if you have one, as we will begin by working in sections with rehearsal CDs. -DrW
Course Evaluations
May 11th, 2013
From Peggy: Dr. Whitmire referenced course evaluations to be completed. For those of us who don’t access NVCC’s information systems very often, here are some detailed instructions:
· Go to the NVCC web site: http://www.nvcc.edu/index.html
· Click on the “My Nova” tab
· Click on the “Log into My NOVA” button
· Enter your NVCC user name – looks like your first initial-last name-four digit number, and enter your password. If you don’t know these, click on either “Look up my username” or “I cannot access my account” and follow instructions.
· Once logged in, click on Gmail
· Look for an email with the following subject line: “Course Evaluation – 8 Wk 2 and 16 Wk Onsite – NOW OPEN!”
· Follow instructions in the email. When it asks for a student ID use your all-number ID. If you don’t know it, go to this page and click on the appropriate item. https://my.vccs.edu/jsp/user.jsp
Good luck!
Picnic Delayed
May 11th, 2013
From Fred: Heavy rain is forecast on the Weather.com radar from 12 noon today until 1 PM. After that it is sunny weather for several days.
I am delaying the picnic start until 1 PM or whenever the rain stops. Be sure to wear your rubber shoes because the grass will be wet.
Picnic Weather
May 9th, 2013
From Fred: Our chorus picnic will still be on Saturday 12- 3 PM. The weather report for our hilltop says that showers will be more likely after 2 PM.
We’ve cut the grass short so it will dry better in time for the picnic. We expect to have the croquet game set up but not the volley ball.
Glorious Year
May 8th, 2013
From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers-
-My sincerest thanks to each of you for a most glorious year. The amount of music you learned and the number of concerts you performed is incredible: Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, Gabrieli and Monteverdi double choruses, Bach Magnificat, Black History Month Celebration, Britten’s Cantata Academica, and five opera choruses by Verdi and Wagner. It is truly an amazing accomplishment!
-Also, my deepest thanks for your kind words and condolences at the death of my mother. The roses you sent are beautiful. My daughter Elizabeth returned to her work at Wings of Hope orphanage in Haiti last week. She has resumed her blog. If you didn’t get a chance to meet my mom, Elizabeth can give you a sense of the wonderful mother she was.
http://sedeleveale.blogspot.com/2013/04/my-girl.html?m=1
-Don’t forget about the Chorus Picnic this Saturday at noon at Fred and Judy’s place.
-I missed hearing you last night and am already looking forward to the Fall semester. In the meanwhile,
Peace-DrW
PS- You should have received information about online course evaluations. It is very important that you complete yours.

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers-
As many of you will have heard, my mother died on Wednesday. She lived a joyous life that ended peacefully. I am doing OK.
As you know, we meet in Schlesinger tomorrow night. Please arrive by 7:10 pm. We’ll put men on the first two levels of side boxed seating: tenors 0n the right as you face the stage; basses on the left as you face the stage. Sopranos on the first four rows of the right side audience seating; altos on the first four rows of the left side audience seating. We’ll make adjustmetn as necessary. I know you will be in your most quiet, efficient, problem-solving mode, as the rehearsal must start on time.
Monday Night Rehearsal
April 29th, 2013
From Peggy: Here us some info repeated from the Saturday rehearsal as best I could record it.
Orchestra conductor wants us ready to sing exactly at 7:30 pm, so please plan to arrive a little earlier.
The following two items apply ONLY to the Monday night rehearsal and the Friday night concert.
1. Last sung note of Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves (Va pensiero):
Add a whole note plus an eighth note to the existing note and change to a hum at start of added whole note.
Triumphal March:
Cut from the beginning of measure number 71 to letter E (beginning of measure number 90).
At letter J. Sing the written note (an E for all voices) on a whole note, and that’s the end of the piece.

Stage Limits
April 20th, 2013
From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers- The best solution for the Schlesinger stage occupancy limits that we talked about on Tuesday will be for us (or most of us) to be seated in the adjacent balconies and in the first few rows of the side audience seating. It will be interesting..maybe fun. So, we’ll pass out the tickets this week. Don’t let you friends and family miss this Flash Mob style concert.
I look forward to seeing Men today at 3.
