Fall Semester

July 31st, 2014

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers-

Can you believe August is here? As you know, Fall 2014 classes begin on August 20. You must be registered before then, as there is no longer any late registration. Many of you are not yet registered. Please do so right away.

The way to make our chorus sound even better is to improve the vocal ability of each singer. The way to do that is to study singing. Please consider one of these classes:

Class Voice MUS 131
Monday and Tuesday at 6:00 pm

Vocal Seminar MUS 198 01a
Saturday 3:00 pm

My other Fall 2014 classes are:

Music Appreciation
MUS 12103a Friday at 9:00 am
Learn how music works- Bach to Rock

Guitar Class
MUS 16301a Monday at 7:30 pm or
MUS 16302a Tuesday at 11:00 am
Anyone can learn to play the guitar and its fun.

Let me know if you have any questions about any of these classes.

Attached is the latest Fall Chorus Schedule (.pdf).

I look forward to seeing you at our first rehearsal of August 26.

From Peggy:  FYI here is info I received:

Dear Senior Student:
Thank you for your inquiry about NOVA’s new On-Time Registration process as it pertains to your fall 2014 registration.On-Time Registration is one of six new policy changes that impacts ALL enrolling students effective fall 2014 including senior registrants. Seniors will be allowed to register for classes from 12:00AM – 11:59PM on the day before the session is scheduled to start. For additional clarity if your class session begins on August 20th, you MUST register for class on August 19th by 11:59 on this same day.
Specific instructions on how to register for your specific course (s) will be made available within the next few weeks as we continue to educate and update our constituencies via NOVA’s website and other materials that relate to senior On-Time Registration. As you begin to think about and prepare for registration please do the following:
•Make sure your academic record is correct and current forcredit courses, including specific biographical information such as address, date of birth, and telephone number, etc.;
•Know your MyNOVA username and password. Assistance in either locating or resetting your login credentials may be found at www.nvcc.edu/novaconnect/password-help. Please click on the link and follow the outlined instructions.
•Resolve any holds on your record that may be applicable. You can check this information in the Student Information System after you’ve logged in at the MyNOVA tab on the college’s homepage.
•If you are taking a course that requires a prerequisite, please make sure the specified prerequisite has been met or waived (whichever is applicable.)
NOTE:  Those seniors who wish to enroll in ESL20/24 will need to come on campus to be registered. Seniors who wish to enroll in a course that has been taken twice are not permitted to register themselves unless that class is listed as one being exempt from the two-enrollment limit. More information may be found at www.nvcc.edu/catalog/cat2013/policies/repeating.html. If this policy impacts you please come to the campus the day before the session begins for special registration assistance.

Vespers Solos

July 11th, 2014

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers-

I have decided to have the solos in the Mozart Vespers sung by members of the chorus. We will have auditions on September 16 (our 4th rehearsal). The audition selection for the SATB solo quartet will be III. Beatus vir. I have attached an mp3 file for those who can receive them. I am sure Kate will have it up at novachorus.org very soon.

There will be a separate audition for the soprano solo V. Laudate Dominum.

Fall Season

July 10th, 2014

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers-

-I hope you are having a wonderful summer. I have enjoyed some restful days, but am now turning my attention to our Fall season.

-Please register for chorus now (MUS137 01a). If you know skilled singers who are looking for a great group, please recruit them. We are singing Mozart’s Solemn Vespers and Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs. It doesn’t get any better than that!

-Our Saturday rehearsals will be 12 noon to 1:30 pm. Those of you who have regularly done so, please register for the Saturday section (MUS 237 01A).

-I hope that many of you will also register for MUS 198 01a Seminar and Project (#64675): Vocal Repertoire which will meet immediately following Saturday chorus rehearsal.
This vocal performance seminar will emphasize technique, style, diction, and interpretation. It will afford a weekly a opportunity to perform your songs weekly
with an expert piano accompanist, Christine Hagan. I will need some of my senior students to register as paying students to make a go of it.

-I also have two sections of Beginning Guitar (MUS163 01a and 02a). It is always great fun. I’d love to have you in the class.

More to come. In the meanwhile, have a great summer.

Chorworks’ summer workshop

June 21st, 2014

From Philip Cave to Dr. Whitmire: I hope you are enjoying a good summer.

Chorworks’ summer workshop in DC approacheth…and I wanted to let you know about some concerts by my UK ensemble Magnificat, who are on tour in the NE and are performing and acting as faculty for the workshop. Please will you forward this to friends and colleagues who might be interested?

1. On Tuesday, 24th June, we are singing the lunchtime concert at Church of the Epiphany in downtown DC, with music by the great English composers John Taverner, Thomas Tallis, Robert White and William Byrd. The program covers the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth I, and includes White’s spectacularly beautiful and moving Lamentations for Five Voices. (Admission free: donation requested.)

2. At 7:30pm on Friday evening, 27th June, we are performing at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle on Rhode Island Ave, NW. The program begins with more English music, including Robert White’s “Tota pulchra es” which has been specially reconstructed for us. It is one of only a handful of 16th century English settings of words from the Song of Songs – and it forms a link to the second half of the program, which consists of Continental settings by Palestrina, L’Heritier, Isaac, Lassus, and others. (Admission free: donation invited.)

3. Then the next evening, Saturday 28th, MAGNIFICAT will perform with the summer school participants in their closing concert. This will take place at St. Paul’s, K-Street NW, at 7:30pm. It features some fabulous Song of Songs settings, such as Clemens Non Papa’s “Ego Flos Campi”, and some rareties by Praetorius, Massaino, Bertulosi, Croce and da Silva. (Admission free: donation invited.)

Magnificat was formed in 1991, and specializes in the restoration and performance of neglected choral masterpieces with particular emphasis on music from post-Reformation England and from late 16th century Spain. We have released over a dozen CDs, the two most recent ones being recordings of Latin-texted sacred music from Tudor England. Magnificat’s singers are among the UK’s leading consort singers; they frequently sing for other groups including The Tallis Scholars, The Sixteen, and Stile Antico. Magnificat has won prestigious awards from the BBC, and from Gramophone Magazine, etc.

Please visit www.chorworks.com for further information.

Ruthanne Lodato Scholarship

May 19th, 2014

From Debra Gunnerson to Christine Hagan:

Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association is collecting donations for the Ruthanne Lodato Scholarship. She was gunned down and killed in her home in Alexandria Virginia. Her continued legacy through NVMTA will be a yearly scholarship to a needy student, a promotion she would have been most proud of accomplishing. With your help, we can provide each year funds for a financially needy student that would help with the burden of expensive music lessons.

Send donations to
Debra Gunnerson,
4509 Hazelnut Ct.,
Chantilly, VA 20151.

Checks should be made out to NVMTA, stating Lodato scholarship in the memo area. Thank you all for your help.

Stage Instructions

May 5th, 2014

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers- I am really looking forward to tomorrow night. Please be on time at 6:30 pm. Allow time for traffic and parking problems. Sopranos, Tenor and Basses altos take your places on the seated risers at the back of the stage. Remember that all clappers should be on row one. Altos take a seat in the audience like last Tuesday. I want to rearrange you so that sitters do not feel isolated from their section.
Yours-DrW

On second thought, the alto riser arrangement will impact sopranos. So sopranos please take a seat in the audience at 6:30 pm. -DrW

Encore Chorale

May 4th, 2014

From Vicki: Hello everyone.

I sing in the Encore Chorale at the Smithsonian and wanted to inform you about our upcoming concert. There are 130 singers in the group and Encore is an organization that promotes choral singing opportunities for people who are age 55 and older.

The concert will consist mainly of secular music including songs from Porgy and Bess, Do I Hear a Waltz, Oh Light Awaken and much more. There will also be a sing-along for everyone and songsheets will be provided.

The concert will be held this Friday, May 9 at the Church of the Epiphany beginning at 7:30. From past experiences, I would say that the concert will end about 9 P.M. and there is not any charge to attend.

If you have any question, please let me know at vicki.ratcliffe @ gmail.com or feel free to telephone at (703) 823-5232.

Vicki

Summer Sings

April 30th, 2014

From Fred: The 32nd Season of Washington Summer Sings will be on Tuesdays at 7:30 during the month of June, as usual.

We usually have about 200 good singers from the best choruses in the DC area who have performed these works several times. You sit with them: Sopranos and Altos up front; Basses and Tenors behind them. The director, pianist, and soloists are professionals who volunteer their time.

So… you have never sung one of them? So what? Sight read. The director often goes over a few passages that cause trouble, even with good singers – and then you “perform.” No rehearsal; just perform it.

All four will start at 7:30 PM and will be at:
Western Presbyterian Church
– 2401 Virginia Avenue, N.W.
– Washington, D.C. 20037
(corner of 24th. & G. Streets, near Foggy Bottom Metro & GWU)

There is parking under the church if you get there at or before 7 PM. On street parking usually has some vacancies starting a few blocks away; and there are commercial parking lots a few blocks away. Carpooling with someone who has done this before is recommended.

Admission is still $10 per person. Bring your own copy of the music or rent a copy for $2.

I have attached a copy (.pdf) of their flyer but just in case it does not survive; here is the critical info:

June 03 -Brahms: German Requiem (in German); J Reilly Lewis, Music Director, Cathedral Choral Soc
June 10 -Mozart: Requiem; Robert Shafer, Dir. City Choir of Washington & Shenandoah Conservatory
June 17-Faure’: Requiem and Cantique de Jean Racine; Thomas Colohan, Washington Master Chor.
June 24-Vivaldi: Gloria, Thomas Beveridge, Artistic Dir New Dominion Chorale & National Men’s Chor

Talk about this with the “experienced” members of NOVA Chorus next Tuesday, when you are not on stage.

Parking

April 26th, 2014

From Bass Section Leader Ray: I’ve just learned that the memorial service for James Schlesinger will be held at Schlesinger Center at approx. the same time as our rehearsal. Parking may be a problem. Might be a good idea to come early.
